Mathematics Department Chair, New Trier Township High School
NCSM has had a profound effect in improving mathematics teaching and learning in the U.S., and I am honored to chair the Nominations Committee of NCSM. The current initiatives of the organization have the potential to have a profound impact on the mathematical experiences of our students. NCSM is also reaching out to a wider group of leaders than ever before-supervisors, teacher educators, principals, department chairs, classroom leaders, mentors, and coaches-all mathematics-oriented leaders at the preK-12 level. NCSM has been an important part of professional development for many of us. NCSM has also grown as an organization promoting equity. It is important for all of us to encourage other leaders to be part of our organization to take advantage of the benefits of membership and to be part of the effort to improve the quality of mathematics education.
I joined NCSM after becoming the mathematics department chair at Kenwood Academy in the Chicago Public Schools in 1985. I realized quickly that NCSM was an organization that could help me grow in my new role, and I joined the organization. In 1991, I became the mathematics department chair at New Trier Township High School, and NCSM became much more important to me because of my new position which was more administrative and supervisory than before. I must say, NCSM has been an important part of my professional growth and development, and joining NCSM was one of my best professional decisions.
