After remains of Hurricane Irene in southern New England closed many schools because electricity was knocked out for several days, many schools had a late start which will need to be made up in the summer before school ends. Then the end of October brought a sad Halloween trick with a furious snowstorm that again caused widespread downed wires and another series of no-school days.
Thank goodness our New England teachers are resilient!
November 8 and 9 brought two very successful math conference opportunities. The ATMNE (Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England) held a spectacular conference in Warwick, RI, with a stellar line up of national speakers as well as regional speakers willing to share their insights into a better math education for all children. Many thanks to Judy Curran Buck for setting up and staffing the NCSM table at this conference. She was able to share information about our organization with attendees.
On November 29 ATOMIC (Associated Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut) also held a very successful mathematics conference. Steve Leinwand wowed the audience with his outstanding keynote speech! CT math folks are always happy to have our 'homegrown' math expert come back from Washington DC to share his wisdom.
