Region W2 Report - Winter 2011/2012

News from the Western 2 Region
Hope Bjerke, Western 2 Regional Director
Winter 2011

All is pretty quiet on the Western 2 Region conference front for now. We just had several quite successful conferences in Oregon (NWMC in Portland), Southern California (CMC-S Conference in Palm Springs) and Northern California (CMC-N Conference at Asilomar). CMC-Central has a STEMPosium set for March 9 - 10 in Clovis, California. You can go to cmc-math.org to register online.

There are key decisions being made in California regarding the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. Several commissions, panels and committees will be appointed over the next few months. Four focus groups of mathematics educators will be appointed and meetings will be held in different parts of the state to solicit input on the new Mathematics Framework. Many members for the newly created Instructional Quality Commission (replaces the Curriculum Commission that was de-funded over two years ago) will be appointed by the State School Board. The Curriculum Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee that will draft a revised Mathematics Framework will be chosen in April 2012. If you have an interest in being appointed to any of these groups, you can get more information on the California Department of Education Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks Web page at: www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/

Have a wonderful Winter Break and a Happy New Year. See you in April at the NCSM Annual Conference in Philadelphia.
