News from the Eastern 1 Region
Suzanne Libfeld, Eastern 1 Regional Director
Winter 2013/2014

The 46th NCSM annual conference this year is in New Orleans, April 7-9, "Jazzed Up Mathematics Leadership." Several sessions are focused on Common Core State Standards and Emerging Leaders. The strand descriptions can be found main conference page. The conference is a great opportunity to enlarge your network of resources and tools to support your work. I hope you are planning to attend and will also attend the Eastern 1 Regional Caucus during the conference. It is a great opportunity to meet and network with leaders in your region.

Fall 2013 was an exciting time for conferences.

In September, NYSAMS, the NYS Association of Mathematics Supervisors, hosted the Sixth Annual Hall of Fame for Mathematics Educators in Tarrytown, NY. The honorees were Dr. Elliott Bird, Dr. Alice Artzt and Maxine Leonescu. Nominations are open for the NYS Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame which will be held in Albany, NY on September 17, 2014. Nomination forms are available on nysams.org.

In October, I attended the NCSM Fall Leadership conference in Baltimore, Maryland, "Digging Deeper: Leadership Tools for the Common Core Era." The sessions focused on Algebraic thinking across grades K-5; NCSM's Great Tasks, K-5 and 6-12; and NCSM's Situations project. The Fall 2014 Leadership Conferences will be held in Indianapolis, IN, Richmond, VA and Houston TX.

The Association Of Teachers of Mathematics in New England, ATMNE, hosted their annual conference on October 24 and 25 in Killington, Vermont. ATMNE is a consortium of organizations of mathematics teachers from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. In the exhibit hall, I hosted an NCSM table and generated a lot of interest in all of the NCSM on-line and print resources.

I attended The Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, AMTNYS, hosted their 63rd Annual Conference in Buffalo, New York, November 7-9, and the NYSAMS annual Breakfast meeting on November 8.
